Feather 'n' Flame: Phonic Home is the soundtrack album for F.F.: The Harpy & Dragon, composed by Neon and the Argie Bees. Currently unreleased, the album features all the tracks from the Atari Jaguar game, rendered in an enhanced fidelity than what is heard from the game itself, which is achieved by re-rendering the songs directly from the tracker software.
Select tracks are also presented in "reimagined" versions, where their MIDI/tracker data is rearranged and played through other higher-quality digital/virtual instruments, on the compilation album Soundtrack to Flye 'n' Frie's Retro Remains — Reimagined.
Like the title of the game, the title of the album is also semi-based on a reference to E.T.: The Extraterrestrial, that being the phrase "phone home" (from the movie) being mixed with the audio term "phonics".
Background
After listening to the soundtracks of at least 15 Atari Jaguar games, it was decided to have the soundtrack for F.F.: The Harpy & Dragon have a sound that matched the Commodore Amiga demoscene.
As such, the selection of instrument samples used throughout the soundtrack was chosen from Amiga SoundTracker sample disks from the 1980s and 1990s, and from the collection of ex-CU Amiga Magazine editor Tony Horgan, as available on aminet[1].
Composition
The album was composed using the Windows version of PT2-clone, a ProTracker 2 clone written in C by Olav Sørensen (@8bitbubsy)[2], after following YouTube tutorials on ProTracker created by wasp / PACiF!C^Powerline[3], due to this software being period-accurate to games released for the Atari Jaguar in the 1990s that also had their music composed on a Commodore Amiga using ProTracker.
It also relied on the separate tracker software OpenMPT, as it was quicker to load samples, loop them, and edit certain notes using that program. Each song only has 4 channels due to software and hardware limitations of the Jaguar, the MOD format, and the tracker software.
Production
Album artwork
The album cover art reuses the box art for the original Atari 2600 version of the F.F.: The Harpy & Dragon game, with layout and text changes to match the album.
Of additional note, the glowing rainbow originally seen emanating from the coloured half of the pixel art of Flye's face in the game's box art is missing, for legibility reasons.
